My youngest child is now 11-1/2. This past Christmas, we figured out he finally wasn't a believer of Santa (which, if you know me, is totally agreeable as I believe Santa gets too much credit for all the hard work we parents actually do). However, we were treading carefully because at Easter, only months earlier, we'd thought he was old enough to know better, too, but found ourselves scrambling at the last minute when he announced we still needed to color & hide eggs for the Easter Bunny.
This weekend I quizzed the two older boys on what they thought their brother's current state of mind was regarding Mr. Cottontail. Neither thought it possible he would still be that gullible, but sometimes with Branden, you just never know.
I finally got a chance to feel him out myself and I ever so nonchalantly inquired if he would possibly think the Easter Bunny's duties still necessitated a basket of candy, or if they could be fulfilled with, oh, say a Target gift card instead. He continued playing his Angry Birds game as he mulled it over, and then said that actually HE had been trying to tell the Easter Bunny for some time now that he'd actually PREFER a Target gift card instead of all the candy. So to make sure we were really on the same page (as often we are not) I rephrased. "So......you would think it was just fine if the Easter Bunny brought you like a $20 gift card for Target?" Still fixated on his video game and without missing a beat he replied, "Actually, now that I think about it, instead of a Target gift card, I really would like him to just leave money. But make it $25. Cash."
On the one hand, I'm a bit sad that my last child, my baby, is no longer innocent enough to believe. But with the realization that this finally means no cheap plastic baskets, no artificial grass for my cats to eat and puke up, no trying to find 3 of every single candy, gum, chocolate bunny, Peeps, and toys, I was finally free of the slave labor task of doing all the hard work just to let some stupid-ass house-hopping fake rabbit take the credit. This definitely goes in the win column.
